Sylvia Brown, 2nd Grade

Hello, my name is Sylvia Brown and I am a 2nd grade teacher at St. John’s Catholic School. I graduated from Athens State University with a BS in Elementary Education. Teaching has been my dream for many years. I am married and have two children; Chris attends the University of North Alabama (UNA) in Florence and Melanie attends Sparkman High School. I am originally from Texas but my husband and the Army brought us here in 1994. Other than teaching, I like to read, cook, and spend time with friends. Most of all, I like to spend time with my family and also visit my family in Texas when I get the chance.

My goal in second grade is to provide my students with a faith filled environment, physical and emotional nurturing, and the educational skills they need to be happy and productive citizens.

Second grade is a very important year in the student’s spiritual growth. The students are involved in several parish activities in connection with First Reconciliation and their First Holy Communion. Students will also be going on several educational field trips that will enhance classroom instruction.

In the second grade classroom the curriculum will include religion, reading/literature, grammar, math, spelling, science, and social studies. Outside the classroom, the students will be going to specials that include music, art, P.E., computer, and Spanish. Since I am fluent in Spanish, I take every opportunity to teach my students basic Spanish or review what my students learned during their Spanish class.

I encourage each child to appreciate his/her uniqueness and to value the wonderful differences that make them all so special. I am excited and looking forward to our upcoming year full of learning adventure and fun!
